2018 Herne Bay Winter Series June - August

First place for the 16th time, Georgio.

First place for the 16th time, Georgio.

Another great series with a total of 65 players participating over nine weeks. Thanks to Miles M for compiling scores and providing updates after each round, to Angela M for supporting Miles throughout the series, and helping Pam J in the kitchen preparing food for the final day. Thanks to Pam for the fantastic prize table and delicious food. Pam is chief organiser and introduced this tournament format to Herne Bay approximately 20 years ago and it has proven to be very popular ever since. The objective of the random draw format for each game is that it's a fun tournament that builds bridges between players who would normally never play together.
Results: 1. Georgio Vakauta, 2. Junior Puleitu, 3. Allan Fletcher, 4. Andre Noel, 5. Tom Paulo, 6. Ian Baker, 7. Ann Shields, 8. Virginia Kirk-Smith, 9. Seti Mailei, 10. Tasha Storey, 11. Our long-serving committee members

Winifred&Norman.jpg

At our August 2018 AGM Norman Stanhope and Winifred Lamb were presented with a hamper to show the club’s appreciation of the time they have spent on the committee. Winifred was on the committee for nearly 10 years, two of those organising hall hire with assistance from Norman when needed. Norman was on the committee for a record 14 years, as president in 2014 and again this year. He has been invaluable to the club, making sure things get done, organising building maintenance inside and out, communicating with council on behalf of the club and on Thursdays keeping us up to date on what’s happening. They are now both taking a well-earned rest from committee work but definitely still active club members.

2018 The French Festival 9-10 June

On the weekend when the French played the All Blacks at Eden Park, the Cloud became a French Village and Fanzone. As part of the festival a petanque triples competition was held in the area between the Cloud and Shed 10 on Queens Wharf where eight 10-metre pistes were constructed.
The two-day fun tournament was very successfully organised by Ann Shields and Margaret Penny. Read Ann's informative APA report here.

Arbour Day (5 June) a flowering cherry tree planted in memory of Chris Beams

Chris was a club member for 10 years and was well known by all for his quick wit and sense of humour. He also made his mark as committee member, treasurer and very noticeably as gardener – planting many shrubs and the trees on the eastern slope, also citrus trees and establishing a productive vegetable patch for the benefit of all. He was a greatly valued personal friend of Sandy and Francoise.

International coaching qualification

Six NZ players have gained their Level 1 Petanque International coaching qualification, approved by FIPJP, with Kant Petchaboon.
Kant, who is from Thailand, is one of only four players in the world with a Level 3 qualification.
Congratulations to Allan Fletcher, Andrew Mailei, Claire Bradburn, Graeme Morris, Jean Parley and Neville Frost who are now officially Level 1 international coaches.
Thanks to Kant for your inspiration and knowledge and taking the time to come to NZ. Great for petanque in NZ.

A farewell Thursday morning tea for Beverley

Beverley Morris (QSO), now 94, has decided to retire from petanque. She has been an active member of Herne Bay Petanque Club for over 22 years, serving on the committee for many of those years. Her story about the early history of the club is included on this website. Beverley has always been competitive on the pistes and enjoyed her games. All in all a great role model for other members.

J-P Cuer.JPG

Farewell to Jean-Pascal Cuer

JP is leaving us!  He has been appointed to a new position at Fraser Coast Anglican College in Hervey Bay, Queensland, Australia.
JP has been an invaluable member of our club and contributed so much as club secretary, APA representative, DIY person and leader of working parties and much more. He has always been fun to play with and contributed much to the "A" interclub team and been an outstanding member of Herne Bay Petanque Club.
We wish Jean-Pascal all the best for the future.

NEW PetanquEMAG Southerners, Marilyn and Colin Bunce and Alan Carter are producing a new PetanquEMAG – a successor to Graham Morris’ printed Petanque magazine. Their first October 2017 edition includes “To Ghent I Went”  an entertaining story from Herne Bay member Ann Shields about her experience as a member of the NZ team taking part in the World Championship Petanque in Ghent, Belgium earlier this year in April 2017. Read it here.

This Auckland v Wellington challenge was a two-day tournament with Singles and Doubles on day one and Triples on day two. Points were allocated for wins as follows: Singles 1 point, Doubles 2 points, Triples 3 points.
Day one: After the first two rounds of Singles (24 games), the score was locked even with Auckland 12, Wellington 12. After three rounds of Doubles (18 games), Auckland ended the day on 38 points, Wellington 22 points.
Day two: After three rounds of Triples (12 games), Auckland had 65 points, Wellington 31 points. Auckland had retained the cup and it was decided not to play the fourth round.
The competition between the regions was much closer than the final results suggest. Auckland players were forced to fight for their wins, many games ended in scores of 13-12, 13-11, 13-10 etc. A very enjoyable tournament with all games played in good spirit under blue skies with no wind and no rain... Perfect ! The local Manawatu Petanque Club did themselves proud as hosting club, welcoming and taking care of all players and management with a spread of delicious food available both days.
